When to use the ‘high importance’ flag on emails

by Matthew Stibbe on February 15, 2006

High Importance EmailIn my opinion, the only reason to set the ‘high importance’ flag for an email is if your wife is going into labour or they’ve sounded the four-minute warning. For some reason, many PR companies think it is okay to attach a high-priority flag to emails like “Symbian OS shipments in Q4 2005.”

Does the sender think that busy, cynical journalists will open unsolicited press release emails before, say, messages from their loved ones on Valentines Day just because of a little red exclamation mark? Argghh. This profession we’re in!

My advice is not to use the high priority flag on emails unless it is genuinely high priority. But you didn’t need me to tell you this.
