Great post! Many thanks for explaining how and what the term, 'off the record' is, what it implies and can or cannot do for the interviewee. 

In essence, what I have learned from you is if you have things you do not want known -  do not do the interview because, as you say, you cannot undo/delete the words from the journalists memory.

Please note that despite what the cartoon depicts, I do regard the journalist profession in high regard. But for a few scurrilous individuals, all journalists get painted unfairly with the same brush.

I shall make amends in my new , ' you must ooze' series of cartoons.
