Truthful in-flight announcements

by Matthew Stibbe on September 19, 2006

Cirrus Airframe Parachute When I take passengers flying, I usually show them where the parachute handle is and how to operate it. If that doesn’t scare the willies out of them, I give them the ditch-in-the-sea briefing. Failing that, I say ‘there are toilets at either end of the flight’ and that really gets them.

(Actually, my pre-flight briefing is online at my personal website.)

The Economist recently had a very entertaining and honest article about airline in-flight briefings. I recommend it.

In the photo, is that the pilot making a voluntary exit with a parachute or was he forced to walk the plank by the terrified passengers after the inflight announcements were made…?!

This is a Cirrus – the same kind of plane I fly – and it has a built-in whole-airframe parachute for emergencies. This is a picture of the system being tested.

However, I did take one couple flying and afterwards they said “we’re not afraid of flying any more, but we are really afraid of pilots!”
