Steven Spielberg can retire. Digital video is taking over.

by Matthew Stibbe on January 14, 2008

This awesome video shows how three graphic designers recreated the Normandy landings in four days for a BBC TV documentary.  I saw the show before I saw this video and I really thought that the BBC had licensed the clips from Saving Private Ryan.  It’s that good.

The other day, I mentioned that my old Canon colour inkjet printer was a transformational piece of kit in the early nineties. Perhaps HD video, 3D graphics and digital editing software could have the same effect today.  Why spend $100m on a movie when these guys can do it at home on their Mac.  Amazing stuff.

Very impressive. I also assumed that the BBC had used footage from Saving Private Ryan.

I do hope this sparks off a craze on Youtube. I look forward to the Battle of the Five Armies (from the Hobbit) recreated by two men and a dog.
