So blind pilots can find it

Airport sign that reads

It reminds me of the old pilot joke about the passenger who asks his captain “Can you see that mountain at the end of the runway?”

“Yes,” says the captain.

“Good,” says the passenger.

(Actually, this isn’t a joke at Stans, Switzerland where I went to test-fly the lovely Pilatus PC-12 for the Robb Report. There really is a bloody great mountain at the end of the runway.)

The ADA requires permanent room designations to be accessible. The example you photographed is clearly a marginal use case. These things happen. On the other hand, maybe they throw Christmas parties there and sighted crew have blind guests or family members.

Fair point, Joe. Thanks for pointing that out. No offence intended, just irony.

Many years ago the ticketing agent at the Launceston, Tasmania airport, asked me whether I wanted to sit in the front or back of the plane. “Which is safer,” I replied. With studied courtesy, he replied, “I have never heard of a plane backing into the mountain sir.”
