Slugs and snails and puppy dogs’ tails: what my blog is made of

by Matthew Stibbe on June 21, 2006

[Update 11 March 2010: This post is mostly out of date now.]

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past couple of weeks adding features to my blog and I wanted to give everyone involved their props:

  • Blogging software: WordPress
  • Original site template: plaintxtBlog
  • Spam filtering: Aksimet
  • Digg and del.icio.us plugins: Solutoire.com
  • Google sitemap generator: Arne Brachhold
  • Technorati tags: SimpleTags
  • Readability stats for WordPress: Flagrant Disregard
  • Mailing list management: Feedblitz
  • Stats: AWStats
  • Photography: some of it is me, most of it is from iStockPhoto
  • Other software: Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006, Ipswitch WS_FTP, Fantastico, FrontPage 2003 (I use this to edit longer posts in WYSIWG, Word is rubbish because of all the HTML spam it generates).

I enjoyed hacking around a bit with the code the powers my blog. Takes me back to my programming days and I understand WordPress’s slogan, ‘Code is poetry,’ a bit better.

I’ve still got a few things to do (any tips?):

  • Logo or page banner
  • Email post to a friend
  • Get the email signup button to look like the search buttong
  • Support for Blo.gs, Furl, Reddit, Feedster
  • Some minor cosmetic stuff
  • Write a ‘how to RSS’ for beginners for this and ModernPilot.com
  • I’d like a spell checker inside WordPress – apparently this is available already in the hosted version

Is there anything else a blog-about-town should have?

For banners, seeing as how your current header is set up, maybe you might want to have a random image script going, with cropped and resized versions of some of your best photos. For example, you could crop 5-10 of your best photos to a certain size, upload it to a directory, and put the snippet of PHP code that you need in your header.php file in a DIV named header-img or masthead-img, and style it with CSS to make it centered. Just the way that I think it could be done, but there’s many different ways of doing it. Hope that helps :)
