People, even journalists, tend to be nicer when you admit mistakes and show you’re trying.

You’re absolutely right. I can think of several occasions where a PR firm has compounded a relatively minor problem by a studied refusal to admit they had done anything wrong or any apology. Not admitting mistakes looks arrogant. Doing so looks human.
