Novelist late with book because of computer game

by Matthew Stibbe on September 5, 2006

The Indepedent reports that Iain Banks, writer of literary fiction and, with the addition of a middle initial, science fiction, is three months late with his latest novel because he became addicted to Civilisation.

It is curious how addictive these games become.  I reckon that, collectively, Harpoon, SimCity, Civilisation and Command Conquer (with sequels) have eaten up a couple of months of my life.  Of course I also spent over ten years running a computer games company so you could say that I lost a decade to games!

My wife knows about my secret addiction and she hides the disks of any game that seems to take too much time and rations me.

You must do Half Life2 & HL Episode One and then Far Cry.

I would have figured Iain Banks as more of an Eve Online gamer.

Still, Civ 4 is a fantastic game.

Ha! I share a study with my son, who is thoroughly enjoying working his death-dealing way through HL2.

The gasps of shock (his), the rattle of gunfire, and the groans of the fallen coming from his corner of the room make it impossible not to keep leaping up to see what is going on!

I made even dare a session myself – with the lights on!
