Is this new or am I just the last person on the planet to discover it. I typed in some simple maths question into Google and instead of getting the answer, as I expected, I got a whole calculator. Cool, huh?

Let me put it this way, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle
It’s not brand new (has been around for a few days, may be even weeks, can’t remember), but is still fairly recent, therefore many people won’t be aware of it yet.
Good catch. New to me, but very handy now I know about it.
I also found out that the old trick of doing conversions in Google produces an interactive calculator too. So you can type “12 stone in kilograms” or something. Very cool. Nice one Google.
