New blog features – popular posts, comment love

by Matthew Stibbe on March 9, 2010

Screen shot of popular posts page

There are more than 600 posts on this site and hundreds of comments. I’d like to build on this so I’ve added some new features to Bad Language:

  • A Popular Posts page that shows the top five posts in each  category. It updates automatically, to reflect the latest visitor stats.
  • Improved social bookmarking. If you like a post, please Digg, Tweet, Stumble, Reddit, Google Buzz or just get yourself a BadLanguage.net tattoo.
  • Comment improvements. When you add a comment, you can automatically add your latest blog post and preview your comments in real time.
  • Top commenters. I’ve added a widget that shows the site’s top commenters with a link to their blog.

There are more improvements coming soon; but for the moment check out the popular posts page and the other new stuff and let me know what you think.

If you like this article, please share it!

Lovely work on the new features, Matthew! May I ask how did you implement the popular posts page? Is there a WordPress plug-in for that or is it a Thesis theme feature?

Thanks a lot for your advice!

Thanks. Glad you like the new stuff. The popular posts page is a custom-written plugin specially for my sites. It’s not part of Thesis. :) Matthew

Not going to lie to you… I found this site by googling ” comment love blogs” ;) so yeah… I was looking for a link haha…. But I just wanted to let you know that the features you added are pretty sweet. I’m glad I stumbled across this post… You have a lot of good articles on blogging and writing and what not… This is something I lack :( (which is pretty sad since I’m a college student coming up on graduation soon)… But yeah… keep blogging :) .

P.S: you’ll probably seem me on another post… Looking at that “writing seminar” your offering

I am not seeing the Manage This Blog options in my blog. Is this a widget that needs loaded? If so, where can I find it?

Thank you for revealing the New blog features – popular
posts, comment love of bad writing. I’m always happy to find
someone who is standing up for the English language (including our
version here in the US). The enemy speaks in jargon – and buzzwords
are everywhere, especially in the business world. I hope my new
blog, Business Writing Today, is helpful in a small way. I just
subscribed to your blog. Keep up the good work!

I gladly vote commentluv number 1 plugin. I am a newbie
blogger who is such a technophobe but even I found this easy to
instal and operate. The amount of traffic I have received from
other bloggers within the commentluv community has been great. Also
it has helped me learn so much about blogging as so many
experienced bloggers are part of this community. This is definitely
my number 1 plugin. Also Andy spends so much time looking for ways
to improve things and is so available and interactive within the
    community too. Commentluv definitely rocks.

I just learned of this comment luv yesterday and it is something we are going to implement onto our site right away. I hope this will help us to have more quality comments instead of spending hours deleting the spam.
