Me want: HP Windows 7 Slate

by Matthew Stibbe on March 12, 2010

I’m a sucker for small, ultraportable PCs. I am the proud owner of an Toshiba Libretto 70CT, OQO, HP95, Newton, Sony Vaio P11z, HP 2133, Kindle and an iPhone (my third). The iPad left me feeling a bit ‘so what’. Too big, too limited.

But now I’ve spotted a new thing to want: the HP Windows 7 Slate. It’s a real PC so you can run regular applications but it’s also an iPad style slate. It should be out later this year.

(Hat tip: Wired. Full disclosure: HP is a client of Articulate Marketing and if they want to give me a Slate, I’ll shill for them all day. But this post is my own thing.)

That looks pretty nice. It would be great for reading.

I think that the I like the OQO though. I’m going to have to find that sometime.

I have a NEC Mobile Pro 900 that has been pretty good for reading and some writing. It’s not quite up to snuff though. It doesn’t display some pdfs and it freezes up sometimes. Great keyboard. For what it’s worth though it’s a nice little gadget.

Hi Christopher, Thanks for the comment. I’ll have to look at the Mobile Pro 900.

The OQO (model 01+) is great in theory but it has several drawbacks in practice: 1) it is surprisingly noisy, 2) it gets *very* hot, 3) the touch screen is not very accurate, 4) the stylus falls out of its little niche without any provocation, 5) the keyboard is so small and fiddly that you can’t really use it for anything other than SMS-like short bursts of text 6) it’s not very reliable – my first one failed within a month and 7) the company went bust. I bought my OQO from a UK supplier for about £400 (it was £1200+ when launched) and I have hardly used it since.

ouch. Ya, looks like the search is still on lol. I’m planning on getting a mini 10 from dell I think. They look pretty nice too.

The 900 is pretty decent but it just feels a bit outdated. Plus it uses a mobile version of windows so it’s a bit limited. I like it though, just need something a tad more robust.

    Thanks for the great info.

I’ll go check out the Dell but I’m sort of joined at the hip with HP at the moment! :)

Well it looks great, and probably is a bit more functional than the iPad, but it’s the access to all the iPhone apps that appeal to me. I’d rather get the iPad I think

I think there are more applications available for Windows than there are for the iPhone! :) But I know what you mean.
