From the “I told you so” department, I wrote a post in February (Second life scepticism) in which I questioned journalists’ and PRs’ enthusiasm for Second Life:
In fact, the only thing that seems to be in short supply in Second Life is participants. It looks like the people have more sense than the business journalists.
Now, having praised Second Life repeatedly, Wired has published an article (How Madison Avenue is Wasting Millions on a Deserted Second Life) that takes the same line and backs it up with detailed, interesting reportage. The article closes with this damning paragraph:
“Companies say, ‘It’s an experiment’ ? but what are they learning?” Tobaccowala asks. “Basically, they’re learning how to create an avatar and walk around in Second Life.” Which is fine if that’s what you want to do. Just don’t expect to sell a lot of Coke.

Second Life abused its player base by refusing to give them simple rights like the ability to not have your game money or land (which can equal thousands of US$) seized by them, by not protecting their account information, and by not protecting their game creations against copy bots. They deserve to be run out of business.
Don’t forget about when they clipped our stipends from 500 lindens to 300.
Don’t forget the bait-and-switch scam where they made millions when they screwed over thousands of residents by pricing them out of business with a 63% tier increase.
Don’t forget how they ignore everyone’s abuse reports when you find someone else selling the avatars that you spent months making, so that they can profit from people buying their Lindens to purchase what the thief stole from you.
LL brought all this negativity on themselves. I’ve been a resident for 2 years and it’s always been obvious to me that LL don’t give a damn about their residents but they sure as hell care about what’s in our pockets.
