One of the most amusing typos I found was in the introduction of the Oxford English Dictionary. I can only imagine that they put it in as a joke, not expecting anyone to actually read the introduction.

It read 'You can have aboslute confidence in this dictionary...'

Surprisingly interesting. Is there much money in proofreading and editing compared with writing ?

I would be interested to know more about the career path and prospects.

I fixed the typo. Don't blame Sarah - it's my typing up! <grin> As I've often said, this blog is the only bit of my public work that she doesn't check.</grin>

On David Barr Kirtley's blog (he's an author), he mentioned that he uses software to read his stories back to him, thereby more easily catching errors. After reading his posting, we downloaded the free copy of the software (the free version talks in a robot voice) and my son has used it several times to proofread his work. Here's the link to DBK's blog posting: http://davekirtley.livejournal.com/64179.html

To me, being good at proofreading is analogous to having perfect pitch. I find errors even when I don't want to, and if there are a lot of errors, it can distract from my enjoyment of a book (although sometimes it's fun to fix them).

Sarah,

I also suffer the curse of spotting typos and those other little errors that pervade our written language these days.

Well done, for fighting the good fight!

I spotted this one, just a few minutes ago, which I point out in an entirely constructive sort of way :-)

"...recently i had..."

Our work never ends!

Would it be too pedantic to point out the lower case "i"s used as personal pronouns? You could always blame the typesetter!

Reading from the bottom of the page, backwards, is a good tip - I shall try that. I find it very difficult to spot errors in my own work unless I've had a long break between the writing and the reading.

Thanks for the interesting article.
