How to negotiate

by Matthew Stibbe on February 2, 2007

I was thinking of writing a post about pricing and negotiating but then I came across “How to negotiate copywriting fees without turning into an asshole” on The Copywriter Underground. It’s very good.

I spent a lot of my life negotiating and closing deals for large software projects. What this post says rings true, especially the bit about not giving something unless you get something. Crazy deadline? Certainly, but it’ll cost more.

My approach has always been to be very up-front about my price per word and then negotiate around how many words the client wants. That way they can shape the fee to suit their budget without trying to shave my profit margin. It’s getting harder as my work increasingly involves consulting and project management but a daily rate seems to cure that problem.
