Good point, Bruce. You can't expect quality without quantity and by quantity I mean amout of time and money invested in a writing project. :)

You get what you pay for.

If you demand the lowest possible rates plus the fastest possible turnaround and the largest possible wordcount, you'll get low quality writing.

In the UK, at least as far as I have heard it used, free pitching means doing (billable) work as part of the (unpaid) pitch. It's not quite the same as spec work but the principle is the same. Either way, I'm against it. I don't think it's good for the profession, for reputable clients and it certainly isn't good for me! :)

Frankly, if a client really wants quality stuff, they should pay me more to write fewer words, but their perception is always the opposite.

One quibble; you mention the perils of "free pitching." Over here, that's called working on spec (speculation, because you only get paid if they like what they see, maybe...). A pitch is something we do to get a project (presentation, sales pitch, etc).

Spec work always been immensely popular with clients, and newer writers regularly fall victim to the practice, which is far more widespread than ever.
