How green is your PC?

image I have just posted an article I wrote for HP about green IT to the Ambitious Companies blog which I edit for them. You can also download the full Seven Habits of Ambitious Companies report that I wrote earlier this year.

For my part, I buy my electricity from Good Energy, a 100% renewable supplier and I offset my car, flying and other energy consumption. However, I’m still trying to figure out ways to reduce consumption and I’d welcome any energy saving tips for home workers.

If you’ve got a wireless network connection you can save battery/power on your laptop/PC by switching off the wireless card while you’re not using the connection. Maybe save a few milliwatt hours each day if you can bear to not check email every ten minutes, that is.

More seriously, when you have to take a trip, don’t leave your car idling while you dash back in to collect the various things you forgot and kiss your partner goodbye…five minutes idle time is apparently the equivalent of a 3km drive at 45kmh or thereabouts

Using cruise control saves 7 to 14% on fuel costs, according to edmonds.com:

” We have always agreed with this tip in theory but we hadn’t expected such significant results. First, it smoothes out the driver’s accelerator input by preventing nervous “surging.” Second, it makes the driver take the long view of the road rather than reacting to every change in the traffic around them.”

Cruise control is not good in mountains, though.
