Good writing available free online

by Matthew Stibbe on April 6, 2006

When I run my monthly Articulate Seminars one of the things I advise participants to do is to read good non-fiction writing and to encourage their staff to do the same. I personally enjoy The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Wired and The Economist. Hard to find a badly written, badly edited article in any of them. All of them have websites and republish some or all of their articles online. In addition, there are some equally good magazines that are available free, online. My favourites are Slate and Salon. They have similar qualities to their print counterparts but only appear online. Salon has a slightly irritating process for getting a free day pass that involves sitting through an advert but the results are worthwhile. I particularly like the Ask the Pilot column.

Is it ethical to submit an original (my own) article to more than one magazine?
