Five cool links about writing

by Matthew Stibbe on August 20, 2007

  1. Dumb Little Man’s 40+ tips to improve your grammar and punctuation. If you read this post, you don’t have to read Eats Shoots and Leaves. (In fact you don’t have to read it anyway.)
  2. Visual Thesaurus. It’s a useful tool for brainstorming words. They also publish interesting articles about writing from various notable bloggers. And me.
  3. Buzzword Bingo: An order of magnitude on Steve Clayton’s blog is a useful reminder about how not to misuse common phrases. My personal bugbear is misuse of ‘decimate.’  See also my post The worst press release ever for more examples.
  4. Kiss the Frog Now. This is a company run by Preethi Nair. She is a novelist who quit her management consultancy job to write (but didn’t tell anyone and led a bizarre secret life while she finished and self-published her first book). Now she helps companies with ‘corporate storytelling.  My wife voiced the tape versions of her books and we met her last week for the first time.
  5. Tech writing tips – Watch a user try to follow your instructions on Tom Johnson’s I’d rather be writing blog. Very helpful for anyone writing instructions.

Matthew,

Thanks for the links. I especially liked the “worst press release ever”. Hyperbole will get you nowhere…
