My background - in the very long-ago - is project management and software development so it's not surprising that we would have both heard that expression somewhere. It has a deep inner truth which makes it very compelling! :)

Hi Mathew,

This is odd!

I have written on the exact same topic (fast, good, and cheap) on the very same day, but mainly from a project management perspective. You can find the post <a href='http://www.projectmanagementlearning.com/what-is-fast-cheap-good-pick-two-in-project-management.html' rel="nofollow">here</a>.

Great post.

I always thought that the lack of balance between design and copy cost was more of a local problem. (I live and write in Argentina; maybe you can tell by my English.) Here, for example, very often you see beautiful brochures -great paper, luminous colours, great design- very badly written.

I always wonder why is that. And whose fault is that, also. Are our clients illiterate? Do they rely on having the message purveyed by the object itself? Do we write more words than needed, so nobody reads our work?

I find that when a beautiful editorial product meets great writing, the result is unbeatable. But sometimes I believe I'm the only one thinking that.
