Back in the good old days, vampires were scary.
Now, consider these fictional characters: Angel, Edward Cullen, Bill Compton.
Not so much scary as drippy. They have become Mills & Boon chick flick versions of themselves: Darcy with fangs.
There are two marketing lessons in this transformation:
- Know your real audience. Today’s creators of vampire fiction are very successful at targeting their core audience. Not horror fans but young females with worrying notions of masculinity. Who is your real audience?
- Don’t forget who you are. If you have fangs and drink blood, do it. Don’t get involved in all this romance stuff. Be tough and consistent. Then all you have to worry about is garlic, stakes and angry mobs. What is your true nature?
So there you have it. Everything I know about vampires in one blog post.

Hey Matthew,
You seem to forget ball games.
From Harry Potter to vampires, they all seem to have some sort of preferred ball game in order to seem real.
So, when you target your audience, throw them a ball and they will believe you are real
Yikes. They finally found a way to really castrate Dracula.
It’s just impossible to imagine these stylish figures having real sex.
They probably take their clothes off, get under the sheet and then turn out the light and go to sleep like all good Hollywood figures.
Then again, perhaps I’m in the wrong age group.
