re: One last thought: get a release giving you all rights. The photographer owns the copyright, not you, unless you get it agreed upon.

Typically, the cost for all rights / exclusivity for a photo increases too. The type of Usage for a photograph is just one of many considerations a photographer makes when pricing photography.

[...] I realize some people don’t want to have their personal photos online or use their personal photos as part of their branding. My own view is that your branding will be more effective when potential customers or colleagues can see a picture of you. Just as I believe that your comment on a blog post or forum thread will be more effectively communicated if people can see a picture of you. Matthew Stibbe has an excellent post on using a good photo to build your personal brand. [...]

Adrien - I agree completely. I guess I was just worried that some readers might think it's a bit too much money to spend. Even if you cut your own hair, it makes sense to learn how to do it properly and pick the right style, doesn't it? :)

Sue - it's a very nice picture too! :) I hate having my picture taken too and my photographer had his work cut out to help me relax into it. His advice and experience really helped.

Great article! But DIY...I am biased, I admit, but a DIY headshot is a little like cutting your own hair ;-)

This is really good advice - I absolutely HATE having my photo taken, but the one I had done a couple of years ago by a professional photographer was painless, and has turned out to be the only photograph of myself I've ever felt able to publish.

(The bad news for me is I lost a bunch of weight and it doesn't look like me any more, but I guess that's a problem I can cope with!)

I wondered why I never saw the two of you in the same room at the same time.

(Actually, I haven't seen either you or John Malkovich in a room on your own either! :) )

The rights release is a very good point. Thanks!

actually, John Malkovich is actually me.

One last thought: get a release giving you all rights. The photographer owns the copyright, not you, unless you get it agreed upon.
