I found this on YouTube – the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain’s cover of Back in Black. Awesome. I’m rocking out with my air ukulele. Turns out I’m not the only one, according the NY Times. I’m going to see them live in Salisbury next year. On an existential level, what I like about UOGB is that they take something silly (the ukulele) and make it serious and take something serious (music) and make it silly. We all need to turn things on their heads sometimes.

As a lover of all things Hawaiian, I don’t think of the ukelele as a “silly” instrument; it takes long practice and dedication to make the instrument sing as it should. Check out any of Jake Shimabukuro’s cd’s…I particularly like “Walking Down Rainhill” from 2004′s album of the same name. Very ‘ono.
While a literal reading of my post might suggest that I think ukuleles are silly, a deeper reading should reveal that I respect players and the instrument. I was trying (perhaps unsuccessfully) to make a broader point about the need to shake things up a bit sometimes.

Great find! That “hang 5″ sign rockers make finally makes sense: They were inviting UOGB to cover their songs!
Maholo, dude!

I saw these guys at one of the BBC Proms in the summer, absolutely fantastic, you’ll love them. My favourite is their cover of Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights, and Life on Mars is pretty cool as well.
